These are some photographs from a new installation

I created for Wicklow Gaol (jail), they depict some historical figures

from the jail.

RICHARD HOEY - GAOLER
A tough and strict disciplinarian who worked in Wicklow Gaol both before and after the rebellion of 1798, Hoey lived through momentous times and may have been one of the gaolers who let prisoners out of the gaol to rob and plunder the neighbourhood in 1805. He would have had to pay for the upkeep of the prisoners in his charge, which he disliked doing, and was a man who used the ‘Garnish’ payments system to great effect. (Prisoners had to pay money to him for hay, candles, food and to leave the gaol after their sentence was finished.)

MARY MORRIS
Mary Morris was the Matron in Wicklow Gaol Infirmary and also filled a role as a teacher of basic reading writing and arithmetic. During her time working in Wicklow Gaol she fell in love with Gaoler Edward Storey who later was promoted to Governor of the gaol. The couple married and spent the remainder of their time working together in the gaol. She died in 1885.

LUCKIAN BETTES

A tough and uncompromising ships Captain, he was employed by the authorities to transport prisoners from Irish prisons, including Wicklow Gaol, to New Holland. (Australia) Captain Bettes would bend the rules as regards conditions for prisoners aboard his ship. He would store extra cargo below decks to trade along the route to New Holland. This led to cramped conditions below decks for the transported rebels and felons.

JOHN FOWLER
Fowler was a Wicklow Gaol prisoner who was under a sentence of transportation for being a rebel outstanding in arms against the King.
During his time as a rebel Fowler was known to be a very keen arsonist and had to be stopped on a few occasions from burning the houses of those who stood against the rebels of 1798. He was finally captured, tried and sentenced to transportation for life. Some prisoners were sent into the army of the King of Prussia from Wicklow Gaol. The King had stated he did not want arsonists.

JAMES KING
James King was not a very successful burglar or robber and was taken into custody when he was 19 years old. He was lodged in Wicklow Gaol. King was tried before Judge Perrin who had no hesitation in sentencing King to a transportation sentence of ten years. Henry King, 21 years, was also tried on the same date for the same crimes, and received the same sentence.

JAMES ASKINS
James Askins was adopted into a wealthy family of traders in Wicklow Town known as Haskins. As he grew to adulthood it became noticeable that he was getting himself into trouble and became the black sheep of the family. He was out of control and running foul of the law. His family thought it better to move him to Rathdrum where he committed a murder. He was tried for this, found guilty and hanged within the precincts of the Gaol, earning the distinction of being the last man hanged there in 1843.

CROPPY ‘BIDDY’ DOLAN/BID THE POINTER
Infamous paid perjurer and government spy who testified at a large number of trials of members of the United Irishmen and rebels outstanding in arms against the King. Exposed as a perjurer and a liar, her usefulness to the authorities began to wane and her evidence was not accepted the Lord Lieutenant at Dublin Castle unless backed up by other witnesses. She remained on the Secret Service payments list until the 1820s and she survived until her death on church charity. One of those she gave false evidence against was William ’Billy’ Byrne of Ballymanus.

WILLIAM ‘BILLY’ BYRNE OF BALLYMANUS
Son of a noted landed Catholic gentleman, William was educated on his family estate and in Wicklow Town. He joined the Wicklow Yeoman Cavalry Corp but refused the Oath of Allegiance to the Crown when it was introduced. He went on the run and was a hunted man. On the outbreak of rebellion in 1798 he went to Wexford and became Captain of the Ballymanus Corps of the rebel army. Granted a pardon he went to live in Dublin, where he was arrested. He was tried in Wicklow, found guilty, sentenced to death and hanged at Gallows Lane in September 1799.

BETTY CRITCHLEY
A woman who according to folklore, fell in love with William ‘Billy’ Byrne of Ballymanus. Betty was a member of the Anglo-Irish Critchley family who were avowed enemies of William Byrne. It is said that shortly before he was executed, she visited him for the last time, in Wicklow Gaol, disguised as an apple seller

At a signing event recently, a gentlemen was flicking through the book. He was shaking his head with disapproval and disdain.

When he had finished his silent and withering critique he said "I'll tell you what's a real photograph, you can see wales from here on a clear day" he gestured across the expanse of the Irish sea over our shoulders. Then he produced his mobile phone and said authoritatively "here have a look at this"

On the screen of his mobile phone was an inscrutable mush of pixels with a tiny dark cluster of pixels in the centre.

"See that there" he continued pointing to the mush,"That's Wales! Brilliant isn't it, heh, brilliant isn't it, isn't it"

"Yes it's great" I replied.

Staring Contest

The photograph of the cows in the book was the beginning of a game that cows love playing.

I would take an exposure, then turn my back, the cows would advance towards me and freeze and stare at me as I turned to look at them. We repeated our little ritual a half dozen times.

When they reached the farmers gate I was positioned at the younger cows tentatively approached, gave me a few sniffs and then

licked my hands.

Dial down the green

While printing the exhibition for the launch of 'Wicklow Photographs', an Italian printer remarked upon a print i was making.

"I think you'll have to dial down the green on that print" he said. I asked him to look at it a bit longer. Suddenly he realized it was colour correct and he exclaimed "Oh my god is Ireland really that green"

Animals

The Swans took at bit of managing, carefully tossed cornflakes and movie lights were a part of the approach

and the swans took more than a couple of bites out of me and the cameras. Their droppings were also prodigious and quite unavoidable considering the levels of darkness I was working in.

The goats were quite easily spooked especially in spring with their young, they could be up a scree face in no time and you were very lucky to get anything at all (especially if your deliberately avoiding telephoto lenses).

The donkeys and cows natural curiosity made them much easier to photograph, unlike the goats they would follow me around.

Since moving to Wicklow and going out shooting in sometimes wretched conditions, I have built a bizarre collection of attire. Waders for crossing rivers, a bright orange poncho to make me visible is case of an accident and to keep me dry , the obligatory balaclava to keep my head warm and prevent the wind from flaying my cheeks off, and army boots.

seldom worn altogether but when they are the effect is dazzlng! Its a good thing there is never anyone around to see it.

Have you looked into the river

I had been walking with some friends in glendalough, they were blown away by it. Although they were tired I suggested that we also visit lough dan, specifically where lough dan meets the inchivore river.

They tagged along but almost halfheartedly having been somewhat overwhelmed by the valley of the two lakes (Glendalough). Jet lag also was seeming to get the better of them as we approached the beach. There was a lot of tired talk about hotels and dinner and the cold. In an effort to get my companions to realize where the were I said 'Have you looked into the river'. The black water refecting the beautiful valley immediately had them in its thrall. We barely spoke again for a half hour, the main audio was the deep breaths of satisfaction and the gentle breeze. We watched as huge blue moon rose from behind the mountain and all the light turned pink. We only departed when we knew we needed what was left of the twilight to make our way back.

10 Great Places to Visit in Wicklow

1. Lough Dan - Fed by two rivers, the Inchavore and the Cloghoge. It lies close to the Wicklow Way. There are Peregrine Falcons nesting here. The beach where the Inchavore meets the lake is incredible, where you can see the scree face of Knocknaclohoge and trace the Inchavore on its meandering route back up the glacial valley.
Glendalough - This Place just has it all! Two magnificent lakes, a monastic settlement, Poulinass Waterfall, wild mountain goats , Peregrine falcons, a deserted miners village , Glenealo River, silver birch woods, ravens, sika, stoats, scots pines, magnificent oaks and wonderful views from the peaks.
Coronation Plantation - A singular landscape,particuarly interesting in the winter months. Magnificent Scots Pines with dramatic views of the River Liffey.
Devil's Glen - A great walk, fantastic fauna and dramatic views of the Vartry River.
Glenmacnass - An astonishing waterfall, bountiful with gorse and foxgloves, and vibrant green slopes. The view from the waterfall back to the valley is breathtaking. The heather ion the plateau in august/september is also very beautiful.
Johnnies oaks - A beautiful oak glade where Kanturk Mountain meets the Inchavore River.
Lugnaquilla - Incredible views of the Wicklow Mountains. (Some hillwalking experience required).
The Vale of Clara - A secluded spot for a picnic, wonderful woods passed by the Avonmore River.
Sallygap - A sweeping plateau in the Wicklow Mountains. Stunning with the heather in bloom, but my favourite way to visit in by the full moon while hundreds of deer wander silently across the landscape.
Fancy Mountain - Wild streams, The Cloghoge River, and windswept trees. Pay very close attention to your footing walking here!

These are just ten suggestions but there is plenty besides Brittas Bay, Glenmalure, Enniskerry, Ballyknocken, Blessington Lakes etc etc, but the list is a good place to start!

It is worthwhile to note that The Education Centre of the National Park organize free events eg nature walks, hikes and lectures

The Wicklow Mountains should be Respected; they are exposed, largely uninhabited and rugged. Mobile phone coverage is not great, a minor accident can become a massive problem if you cannot get help.

Placenames from Wicklow Photographs and their meanings

Wicklow - Cill Mhantáin (Contae Chill Mhantáin) - The English name “Wicklow” means the water-meadow of the Vikings. The Irish name “Cill Mhantáin” means the church of Mantán. The lore surrounding the name states that when St. Patrick and his followers arrived in Wicklow the local people were not happy to see them and threw stones at the monks. One of the monks had his teeth knocked out and was thereafter called Mantán, a derivative of mantachán meaning a toothless person, and this monk was later said to have established a church in Wicklow. However, as no examples of the name Mantachán are attested, this is clearly an example of folk-etymology, or the creation of lore to explain the origins of a placename.

Coolgarrow mountain - An Chúil Gharbh - The word cúil in placenames means “corner” or “nook.” Literally “the rough corner.”

Sallygap - Bearna Bhealach Sailearnáin - Often mistakenly believed to derive from “Saddle Gap” because of the shape of the hills in the area. A 1655 entry in the Civil Survey, however, writes “Barneballaghsilurnan.” The last element appears to contain the word sailearnán referring to a wood of willows or sallies thus the gap of the way/road of the sally wood.

Brockagh mountain - Sliabh na Brocaí - The townland of the rock. It is suggested that it is named from the rocky headland at Jack’s Hole.

Cloghoge - Clochóg - Clochóg means stony patch, or place with stone structure.

Lugalla [recte Luggala] - Log an Lá - Luggala has been explained as deriving from Log a’ Lágha, the hollow of the hill (or ridge)(Joyce, Irish Names of Places Vol. I, 391). However, as there are no attested examples of lagh meaning hill this must remain doubtful. On the other hand, one could suggest that the final element derives from latha > lá “of mud," a genitive singular form of Old Irish loth/lath (see Dictionary of Irish Language).

Brittas Bay - Cuan an Bhriotáis - “Brittas” derives from the Anglo-Norman bretasse, meaning a temporary wooden breastwork. It is a reasonably common element in Irish placenames and there are three examples of the placename Brittas in county Wicklow.

Glenmacnass - Gleann Log an Easa - The glen of the hollow of the waterfall.

Scarr - Scor - Rock pinnacle.

Annamoe - Áth na mBó - The ford of the cows.

Devils Glen [recte Devil’s Glen] - An Gleann Mór - The English name, Devil’s Glen, appears to be a late creation from the 18^th century. The earlier name for this may have been Portdarge, deriving from (An) Port Dearg, “(The) red embankment”: “Portdarg… Portdarge… Portdoribeg… seems to have been the name of the Devil’s Glen behind Glenmore House” . The whole glen seems to have been called “Glanmore” which derives from (An) Gleann Mór “(The) big glen.”

Nun's Cross [recte Nunscross] - “Nunn was a family name in Wicklow and Wexford in the 18^th century, and this name probably means Nunn’s cross-roads. It is likely that the name gave rise to the local story that a skeleton found here was that of a nun who had been immured in the wall." The surname Nunn seems to have arrived in Ireland with the Cromwellians.

Glenmalure - Gleann Molúra - The glen of Molúra. “Molúra” is probably a personal name.

Rathnew - Ráth Naoi - “Ráth” meaning fort. “Naoi” is probably a personal name.

Glendalough - Gleann Dá Loch - The glen of the two lakes.

Poulinass - Poll an Easa - The pool of the waterfall.

Tomriland - Tom Réileáin - The element réileán, “level space” is found in the place-name Ryland in Wexford, and Tomriland could undoubtedly reflect derivation from Tom Réileáin. The anglicised element “tom” can represent Irish tom, “bush, clump, tuft” or tuaim, “tumulus, mound.”

River Liffey - An Life - An Life is well attested in Irish literature as the Irish name of the river, but the meaning of the name is unclear.

Lough Dan - Loch Deán - The meaning is unclear.

Lough Tay - Loch Té = Luggala Lake. Té, “hot” is found in Old Irish but this is hardly what is referred to in Loch Té! Téa is also found as the name of the mythical eponym of Tara in Irish tradition and it is possibly the second element.

Inchavore river - An Inse Mhór - Inse = island or river meadow. Mór = big.

Kanturk - Ceann Toirc - the wild boar’s peak.

Glenealo river - Abhainn Ghleann Abhlach - Glenealo = The glen abounding in apple trees.

Bonagrew Little - An Bhánóg Rua - Explained by John O’Donovan as Bun na gCrodh, “bottom of the cattle folds,” in the Ordnance Survey (OS) namebooks (1839), but the occurrence of “Red Park” written on the OS 6” map (1839) sways the evidence towards derivation from Bánóg Rua, from which “Red Park” could be translated.

The book 'Wicklow Photographs' opens with a quote from 'Dreamtime' by John Moriarity, courtesy of The Lilliput Press.

The quote was brought to my attention by my friend Timothy Tate. It seemed to encapsulate the conciousness I find myself in when taking the majority of my landscape photographs.

'On a calm day in the mountains, I postponed all purpose and allowed my spirit to be still. When I was as calm as the lake was I mirrored the mountains serenely as it did. Mirroring them, I didn't modify them. No ebbing into self awareness shimmered them. Clear, like the lake, to my very depths, they touched the quick in me with their unperturbed, ageless summits. By nightfall there was no me.... All of this wasn't something I did. All of this, when I surrendered to them, was something my surroundings did for me. The Black Backs.....

A wonderful poem from Carol Boland one of the Wicklow Writers

The black backs of the herd stand out against the dim green of the field and the curves of their shapes are repeated and magnified in the curves of the hills towering above them. The peace is so grand here, so sharp that swallows cut their teeth on it and crying babies latch on the nipple to swell the silence.

But I hear the land breathe like an asthmatic searching for her inhaler, and the drooling poppies are too red for this day.-Carol Boland

An Encounter at Glendalough

While walking through Glendalough last year with some friends from Montana, a tour guide called Bill Bodger from Wild Wicklow Tours approached us and began to tell us about the history of Glendalough. He told us a bit of a local joke- ' if you're looking for a husband or wife you should walk clockwise around the round tower three times, if you wanted to rid yourself of one, walk around the other way.'

Then Bill told us this.....

'Six years ago I had two young Policemen visit from New York...They had been working on Ground Zero without a break for 36 days...and they said when they visited here (Glendalough) the weight of the world lifted off their shoulders...so there is a spirituality here, those guys felt it'

An Observation

I was standing in a lush pasture in Glendalough and everything was perfect. A bright fog nestled on the jagged ridges of the mountains, trapping and softening the crisp light. Everywhere tones of electric green. Water lillies on the flood plain, behind them delicate alder saplings,behind them the Glenealo river snaked towards the lough and behind the river a pine and scree covered mountain. My thirty year old camera ,my favourite camera, jammed...I'll fix it and come back tomorrow.

It rains all night. I hike back to my vantage point but the pasture is underwater. The lough has swelled one hundred metres further up the valley. The waterlilles had completely disappeared underwater. I should have known better, it is never the same when you return to any landscape. Even if the conditions seem identical there will be some shift within you or without you, and you'll never find that symbiotic moment again.... but there will be something new for you in its place.
